Livid!

I was going through my bloglines this evening and read a post from Tracey and instantly felt her outrage. Turns out the (our publicly funded television and radio station) has a show called The Debaters. Here's what they have to say about the upcoming episode:

Celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Madonna are scooping up kids from Africa and Asia like they were designer handbags. This week, homegrown comedy celebs, Sabrina Jalees and Debra DiGiovanni debate celebrity adoption of third world kids and whether this popular pastime is good for the kid or anybody else.

I find this absolutely disgusting and inappropriate. I'm getting really tired of people who have no understanding of international adoption or the reasons why people adopt internationally making a big joke out of it. Our family is NOT and will NOT be a joke. We have not decided to adopt internationally because it's trendy or popular or because the "cool kids" are doing it. We decided to adopt internationally because that's how we feel this is the right path for us. I sent the following email to show my discontent:

As a prospective adoptive parent I find this episode particularly offensive and disgusting. Comparing children to designer handbags is one of the rudest, most condescending things I've ever heard. To discuss international adoption in this manner is highly inappropriate.

My husband and I have chosen, after much thought and consideration to, create our family through international adoption. It is not a decision that we came to easily, we had a lot of discussions and did a lot of soul searching to make sure this is the path we wanted to take. We definitely did NOT decide to adopt internationally because it's trendy or because our child would be a cute accessory. I find it highly offensive that someone would even suggest this.

Instead of having two comedians who probably know nothing of the process or the reasons why people adopt, why not bring in people who have adopted, are in the process of adopting or social workers and representatives of agencies to discuss the situation in a mature and thoughtful manner.

If you have a moment and feel up to it, please send them an email as well. I even encourage American PAP's to email them as well. I know last year with the stupid show put on by CNN many Canadians complained, the more voices we have, the better. I can't believe they're using tax dollars to produce this garbage.

While not Canadian, I emailed the following in regard to the "We've Rolled Back The Price" comedy debate.
Thanks for sharing.

I understand this was for comedy purposes yet for those of us involved in the IA process it comes off as just another "cheap shot" at IA adoption for the sake of a laugh.

The continued coverage of high profile parent(s)adopting does little to truthfully discuss or at its very least present a more accurate portrayal of what the everyday IA families face in our journey to becoming or adding to our family. It is hard to not take offense after a while. We also know we can't stop all the hurtful things we and our children have directed towards us on an all too frequent basis, simply because of the way our families came into being.

I just know that being laughed at as a family isn't always funny, at least not for us...

I'm sorry, did I hear her say celebs and orphans go together because they both crave attention and NEITHER can afford to have BIG APPETITES? This makes me SICK.

Where do I write to??

It amazes me when people who don't have a clue about a topic are chosen to debate it for the public. I think it is sick to relate to a human child as a handbag.

I really appreciate your thoughts and reply to this.

As I was reading the comments I noticed that Ford really put what I was thinking into words.

Sometimes I just shake my head in disbelief.

I hope you didn't listen to the actual show and hear the "funny" lady's comment on infertility. I was outraged.
